E-4 Overview

Whether you are raising a family, writing a novel, or building a business, your success is dependent on many things not least of which is the nature of your involvement with the process. How powerful are you at the task at hand? How engaged are you with the overall intent? How congruent are you in your efforts? If the project involves others, their abilities must align with yours . The more engaged and empowered the participants, the more accurately any endeavor can succeed in creating the results they desire.

E-4 is the practice of direct and powerful engagement with whatever you are trying to create in the world. It provides an understanding of the creative process and the ability to maneuver through it more effectively. Purely executed, it will maximize your potential for engendering results. It has four core value propositions:

Engagement * Empowerment * Emergence * Evolution

E-4 has five component teachings which identify key orientations to the E-4 Overviewcreative process. The core component is the practice which is deeply grounded in a model of how the world comes into being. This model clarifies an appropriate creative stance that empowers our involvement in the generative process.

The Generative Practice represents an understanding of the process of creativity, whether the result is a momentary impulse, a seamless artistic expression, or an organizational development lifecycle. It applies to successful creation whether it is implicitly or explicitly practiced, and where the result can be a picture, an organization, a product, or a country. Depending on the practitioner/s and the task at hand, it will be expressed as an invisible internal movement, or an visible step-by-step process. The practice is composed of modes which are ways of viewing, understanding, and relating to the world as it is and to the potential of the future creation. They define states of being and actions that are required to cause the new vision to arise in the future. (A quick intro to the practice.)Modes of Practice

Modes are enacted through adopted practices and tactics, things to be done or experienced. These practices and tactics will be used to elicit states of being, knowledge, and generative actions embodying an effective model of how action affects the future world. It helps us to take the appropriate stance and gain powerful momentum in our work. More on the Practice.

The Stance defines our role in the arising world, that is, who we are and what we are doing. It establishes that we are part and parcel of both the results of what has gone before, and designers and actors involved in determining what will be. We get to choose and our choices matter. We act and we affect the future in direct proportion to our creative engagement and our empowered action. The stance is relevant no matter what the creative endeavor for it is the proper orientation that gives us whatever we need to make progress towards our goals.

The Arising World Model establishes a view from which we can see that we are The State Space Becomingnot in control, but neither are we helpless. What arises as the world is an emergent property resulting from what has come into being and the actions of all participants. It reinforces that our engagement counts and shows us that we are really surfing the waves of possibility and potential which are ever dynamic, requiring our utmost attention. The model show us how to surf those waves really engaging at the level of the arising potential. This way of relating to our participation enables us to come more directly in contact with our future possibilities than many of us have ever realized was possible. More on the Model.

Emergent Organizational Structures evolve from ongoing processes when an individual or team is grounded in using the practice. They naturally arise . These emergent relationships are enabled through the quality of the engagement of the individuals. Once the appropriate stance toward the project and the arising potential is established, it enables individuals to interact with each other and the work in a way which puts the creative engagement first and allows a natural give and take of leadership and responsibility. An emergent organization is one in which artificial hierarchies and command-and-control structures are replace by more dynamic and powerful patterns of engagement. Since each individual is able and willing to step up to their full responsibility to the work, the team as a whole is able to get more traction to steadily and rapidly move forward. Each individual naturally moves into whatever needs to be done that meets their skill and talents, each task is picked up and dealt with as it comes naturally to the top of the queue. The generative practice sets up the conditions for this emergent organization to arise.

Catalyzing Leadership enables new responsibility and opportunity for leadership in the midst of a project. In this environment, leadership is the process of seeing where a succinctly delivered catalyst can correct an imbalance in the flow or add power to the engine of change and development. The catalyst may be a word, a tool, or a new building, an infusion of cash, a suggestion, or small celebration. A leader must be able to truly internalize what is hThe Group Momentappening in the ongoing effort in order to identify and disable the impediments that arise. The practice itself enables individuals to see what there is to be done and to be engaged enough to take those tasks on. The do not have to be "told" what to do. So "managing" or "leading" is the process of keeping the team engaged with their practice and quickly responding to unexpected challenges or events that come into the process. For leaders whose experience is command-and-control based, this may seem like a scary prospect. The good news is that one can gently maneuver into the emerging management structures as the team powerfully engages in the practice, and one can use solutions as they arise to gain experience and confidence in the emergent organizational structures and one's ability to catalyze increasing effectiveness.
