I agree that this is more difficult thing than people are assuming, though as you have pointed out, there are simple cases and hard cases. This might be a good topic for a joint white paper---enumerate the cases and some of the possibilities.

The various APIs, tools and SDKs for developers are very interesting. But it is a bit daunting, since they don't all play well together. Google is clearly trying a lot of different things - and deploying them early in their lifecycles. As a result, they don't all run on all platforms (some of the tools aren't available for Mac yet), and they don't all mix (you can't use maps with Gears). Someone posed the question of using maps with Gears at a fireside chat with the Geo team - and they had to think before answering the question - they just hadn't had time to think about it yet - and it turns out that it can't work with the current technologies. So even the Google team seems a bit overwhelmed with all of the options.

We also noticed that with Gears - which supports local data storage - and hence the ability to run occasionally connected applications - there is no support for the synchronization issues between the local store, and a server based store. The application has to invent and provide this. This is a topic for a blog either by you - or maybe I will create one.
